That is an excellent question.
A lot of it was how the wild dice works. It's an exploding D6 that is rolled with every PC's action, even if they don't have that skill trained. That just already says there is something more fun to that. Something that makes our heroes that much cooler.
Plus I remember discovering the Bennie system and remembering the 3.5 Eberron Hero points which worked in the same way.
Plus the generic system itself can loan itself well to any setting if you know what you're doing.
Like are you aware there is a Eberron Savage Worlds set up that Keith Baker helped with?
That's fucking insane and I love it.
Though, honestly, some of the pit falls is that it can be harder to do a grittier story without robbing that wild die.
