Since @staff has a lot on their plate and my pet feature request is unlikely to be addressed in the short term, I decided to do it myself:

You can install this userscript for yourself using Tampermonkey. I've tested in in Chrome and Firefox, and I don't think there's any reason in principle it shouldn't work in any browser that supports reasonably modern APIs.

Here's what it does specifically:

  • If you've already seen a chost, it'll collapse it in its thread.

  • If you've already seen all chosts in a thread and that thread doesn't have any tags, it'll hide the thread entirely.

  • It'll always show you the version of a chost you first encountered, even if you navigate away and come back.

  • Information about what you've seen is only stored in session storage, which means it'll be reset every time you start close and re-open the page. (If people want longer-term storage, let me know and I can probably make that happen.)

Give it a shot! Let me know what you think!

in reply to @nex3's post:

Didn't use to be the case, but for anyone coming back here, Firefox stable on Android now has Tampermonkey as one of the fixed set of add-ons in the add-ons manager!

this userscript (and others) can now Just Work on FF for Android once Tampermonkey is installed from the hamburger menu -> Add-Ons -> Add-ons Manager list.

okay this works incredibly well and i'm a huge fan of it. i didn't know how much i would like having it on but it's pretty useful! it does get the occasional post that i haven't read yet but it's so easy to just click and read it.

just an extremely powerful QOL thing 😩👌

I'm too intimidated to try and install this but this sounds like it implements features I do want, so I hope people who are more confident pick it up, try it out, and the ASSC can make it work i ngeneral

i can open it as a github issue but it seems to hide posts on their own pages if you've seen that post somewhere else before, which seems like it could be fixed with a stricter URL match for only the main feed?
