it's a damn shame that despite the advent of PBR rendering and layer compositing, customisation in games is more locked down than ever

the sims 3 in 2009 - 13 years ago - let you create custom materials and freely select colours for pretty much everything in the game, but the sims 4 locked it all down and only gives a selection of maybe half a dozen predetermined patterns and colours per item, if you're lucky. EA only pointed the finger at the sims 3's create-a-style for the game's performance because it was a convenient scapegoat and they didn't want to pay developers to fix the game or to add a similar system to 4

halo infinite's especially bad for this, not even letting you select multiple armour colours independently any more and forcing you to use pre-made swatches - this also extends to materials, which just feels like it's squandering the work put into the renderer and all the nice materials they added

there's a lot of wide open goals here to just give players really nice customisation options that are likely far easier to implement than the trash fires that are season passes and lootboxes
