As the necromantic siege of Raspedglazes continues, I would like to extend congratulations to our necromancer mayor, who was successfully reelected. I look forward to another year of smithing crossbow bolts and not selling them to the traders who aren't visiting because of the undead siege.
Another zombie goblin managed to breach the defences, despite assurances from the engineering team that the entrance is "literally impenetrable without flight". Luckily this goblin was swiftly dealt with by one of the so-called monster slayers who have taken up residence in the Armoured Peach tavern.
The magma project was coming along nicely, before hitting an awkward snag. I have no idea how to use hauling routes. One minecart is currently filled with magma ready for pickup, pending working out how to actually do that.
Instead, I focussed on sustainable wood gathering. A small section of the mid-level caverns has been sealed off from all terrestrial and aquatic invaders, allowing access to a number of mushroom logs that had been felled before the olmfolk approach caused us to seal the underground. Aerial access to the enclosure and the fort at large is still a risk, and one we know all too well.
The second attempt at tree farming involved the creation of a large, artificial cavern to the north of the main fort. Through a borderline buggy interaction with a dwarf standing in a doorway mining a hole in the riverbed from below, we were able to create a lever-controlled water flow into the main base. This has been used to muddy the floor of the artificial cavern, hopefully providing an environment for trees to grow whenever the water actually evaporates.
Oh, and I also found out that quarry leaves somehow got designated as "do not cook"? So any food issues we had1 are now thoroughly alleviated. Seriousl, we could cook 500 lavish meals before having to use something else if we stopped all food production now. On a more frustrating note, despite being forbidden to, I found out our chef was cooking rock nuts when he made a masterwork rock nut roast.

We have a massive excess of cooked meals. At one point we had so much it was rotting before it could be stored, though that was also due to a hauler shortage.
