Sometimes I just see some dub or people being like "what if x spoke their original" and start thinking about how Punch Out!! Wii is one of the best underrated game on the console.
While I can't say much about the actual controls (sadly never owned it while I had a Wii); everything else about it is just so interesting and well-executed.
The game is in essence pretty barebone. You just go through each opponent till you become World Champion.
The gameplay loop's solid and similar to the original and the bosses have enough differences to not feel like you're just fighting the same opponent everytime.
However the big highlights of the game is that it oozes charms, which boils down to two components: the characters, and Mac's Last Stand
The characters are made of most stereotypes you can find about their country of origin. While stereotypes are usually seen as bad, everyone's just so exagerrated I think you can't help but love them.
A lot of care is also put in conveying their character as clearly as possible with the story limitations of the game. A few pictures, the way they act during the fight and 1/2 lines mid-match gives you pretty much everything you need to know.
And ofc one of the most famous aspects is that everyone speaks their actual language instead of somehow knowing universal English/Japanese.
This detail alone adds so much to the game. Not only does it make the player feel like they're really competing for world championship, it's simply very funny to have a character say stuff to you and you have no clue what they're talking about. If you're bilingual in one of the languages featured, it also feels rewarding to simply understand this particular character.
I wish more games put this feature, because it's genuinely one of my favorite thing ever.
As for Mac's Last Stand it takes full advance of the fact that the game has low replayability.
After winning the champion belt in Contender Mode ("part I" of the story; called Career Mode) and defending your title in Title Defense mode ("part II" of the story) Mac decides to end his career on a high note: go through a sort of endless mode until he loses three bouts, after which he'll retire for good.
You can't quit a match. You can't restart one either. You just fight random opponents among the ones you beat in the past, though you may sometimes fight Donkey Kong (because why not?).
If you lose, it is officially over. Mac retires and Career Mode is FOREVER locked on the file. Didn't get the 10 wins to get Champion mode? Too bad, can't have it on that file anymore.
I can't think of a lot of games with a similar way to end their story, and I love that they chose this approach when they could just have stopped at "Mac defeated everyone and is the undisputed champion of the world".
Punch Out!! is just a game full of good uncommon ideas and I hope it can be an inspiration for a lot of people (or a lot more people, since I can easily imagine it influencing some game developers).
I just wanted to throw some words about how the game has pretty cool stuff, but ended up writing way more than expected.
Tl;dr Punch Out!! great. Hope to see more games with every character speaking in their canon language and endings similar to what Mac's Last Stand is to its game.
