I truly think the Barbie movie might be one of my favorite films in some time. This opinion might be swayed as I haven't seen many films lately, but I would like to think that crying for 30 minutes is evidence of some emotional depth.

In the interest of keeping this post relatively simple, and spoiler free, I think I will simply mention all the ways that this movie is almost a perfect movie to target me. This way if you find yourself in any of the following 'demographics' you might take my word that this movie is for you too.

This movie appeals to me as:

  • A fan of witty absurdism, and an unending amount of really good comedy along those lines.
  • A depressed and anxious 20 something who is hoping to practice mindfulness.
  • A fan of writing that unashamedly attacks the things that are problematic with itself as well as the world as a whole.
  • A trans woman struggling to understand and achieve her own identity.
  • A 'Feminist' who deeply understands not only the struggles that feminism addresses, but also the pressure feminism puts on men to 'be better'.
  • A politically aware 'young person' who wishes more media would blatantly point to issues rather than beat around the bush.
  • A creative individual who is tired of being created by others.
  • Someone who likes cheesy silly musicals just for the fun of it.

If you are also any of the above things, take my word, this movie is for you. I hate hate HATE that this movie is a big marketing stunt to make Barbie toys popular again, but GOD DAMNIT they also wrote a really good movie!
