im just glad bungie isnt breaking their streak of dramatically breaking publisher ties to go off and "make the game they've always wanted to make" only to release a new sci fi shooter with whatever trappings are most profitable at the time

I'm gonna be honest, this is the first time in my entire life that I've ever seen the term "extraction shooter" and I don't even really know what it means let alone why it would be a bad thing
it's probably not The Worst Option For Me Personally (that would be an mmo or something like that, that i have zero to negative interest in) but a good example of an extraction shooter would be Escape From Tarkov.
Players drop into a shared space, obtain loot, and try to get out without dying/losing that loot. If you die on a run, you lose everything. If you make it out ("extract"), you keep everything, and that's held persistently. You could think about it sort of like "what if L4D was competitive".
It's a novel idea, I don't even hate it as a genre, but it feels so bland and blatantly Service Game-y that it feels gross for Marathon. Not thrilled!
It successfully extracted my fleeting enthusiasm for a new Marathon game and made me say "shoot".
we are seeing levels of over that were thought impossible even ten years ago
it is SO weird to bring back marathon for this, it's like the upper limits of the industry's allergy to new IP such that it's actively detrimental by any common sense standard. Anyone who remembers what marathon is won't care even slightly about an 'extraction shooter and vice versa'.
That being said the retro graphic design at least absolutely rules in a way that no game has ever been allowed to look like recently. Is that why they did it???? Because that look is coming back?? I mean they're right and I want games to look like this, so I guess I can't be as mad as I actually want to be.
it feels to me like not THE WORST option that could have happened but it's certainly a massive disappointment. art does look hot though
I dont know anything about the old marathon, but the new one's bright block colors are cool as hell
what is an extraction shooter?
Did ANYONE know what one was before this announcement???? I'm being told it's a battle royale subgenre which is represented best by "escape from tarkov".
Old marathon is a Mac-exclusive FPS with a really well written and intricate sci-fi story and haunting, unfathomable early FPS level design.
oh! it's hard to imagine a battle royale extraction thing having a well-written story with thoughtful narrative levels :(
I've heard people bemoaning just wanting single-player games, and I gotta say, same tbh
Yep! Kinda a weird vibe, though maybe it's possible. Some of Destiny's best writing was in its phone app companion.
A very strange choice of IP? It's the biggest one Bungie has, and is a sci-fi world that is Not Destiny and Not Halo.
It is, uh, a hard sell to make a single player game these days even though I see a lot of them and they are very popular. Every publisher wants an infinity money forever game. Just another symptom of how desire for unsustainable growth warps the whole process.
agree wrt unsustainable infinite money machine brain :(
I'll appreciate all the pretty art assets they make anyways!
i knew only because the newest call of duty game had this same cycle of people being like "what is an extraction shooter? oh it's like tarkov i guess". i have tried that and it's not good. it feels like a battle royale but worse.
i find it weird that this is suddenly seemingly such a big thing when it's really just a "tarkovlike". pvp arena with roguelike progression elements slash permanent inventory
My hopes? Dashed. My dreams? Crushed. My face? Spat on.
