watching Twitter lose all its big-name advertisers on the same day that the "AI" guy gets shitcanned, may I just say, and I say this as a hater:

I don't actually know anything about OpenAI's internal whatevers, but my personal spread on the reasons for Sam Altman's firing are:

0.5% horrific allegations of sexual abuse
0.0% he was Too Close to discovering the Basilisk
0.0% he was the only one stopping them from releasing the Basilisk
99.5% oops where did all the money go

UPDATE: and now the Starship has blowed up

(Space nerds will claim this is totally normal and fine and actually we learn so much from exploding spaceships, and I don't really know enough to contest that. still putting this on the lol pile.)

in fairness the starship was always gonna blow up, it's just a matter of fortuitous timing that it happened today of all days.

it just makes it really funny because this didn't have to end up being One More Thing In The Past 24 Hours and yet here we are. (it's funny and good that it blew up to be clear i just wish it had done a better job of such)

It is true that with the development style spacex uses, blowing up their test rockets is more of a feature than a bug, but last time this happened the specific cause of the explosion was because some moron (starts with an E and ends with a lon) decided to build the launchpad without flame redirectors and concrete chunks ripped up the rocket’s engines.

So I’m definitely not ruling out some kind of absolute idiocy going on. He’s got a track record of that.

Between Starship and the billionaire sub it does seem like the techbros have taken "You can learn more from a failure than a success" to heart in the most techbro way possible: by turning failures into a metric and setting quotas.

Maybe I don't know enough about Techbro Politics, but I'm a little concerned that the reason for him being fired MIGHT be the Basilisk thing.

Not because I believe in the Basilisk, but because I'm concerned the guys hiring and firing people on the Chat-GPT team think that's a real thing.
