Remembering this odd game I played this year. Cute little JRPG. Not like, especially standout or anything but I honestly think the attempt by Nihon Systems, who doesn't seem like a very large company, to do a 3D JRPG in 1998 with prerendered backgrounds, even though obviously not like, on the production level of the prior year's FF7, is really neat? Also I just think the graphics are cute sometimes you just play through a thing because it's simple and cute looking and you just wanna see more.

It's just fun seeing old 3D projects. There's a common sentiment I've seen of early 3D being some abomination that hasn't aged as well as sprites but I find myself just attracted too seeing all ideas that come out of a limited-by-technology art style, whether in real time 3D or prerendered. I find it more fun than exploring more modern games honestly, but I know I'm a weirdo about this stuff. I mean my username's lowpolyrobot. I like low poly stuff. Or medium poly. Sometimes even high poly. I just wish things were more weird and fun.

totally agree w/ your thoughts on the appeal of early 3D art! really like a bunch of these shots.

this game looks like a neat mess. hadn't heard of it. according to YT comments an English translation is complete and it just waiting on the hacking side now.

It’s really cool to see the artistic choices made in an environment where there are heavy limitations. The act of condensing an idea or a place or a story into a medium like that is inherently full of choices and compromises, and also encourages us to imagine what the creator had in their mind or to fill in the blanks ourselves. Such a place or a story can feel so much bigger because we know we aren’t seeing the “full picture” in a way. Early 3D renders and such that you’d find on a PSX game imo are very expressive in a way that was new at the time, and as such they often have this surrealistic gonzo quality to them - FF7, planet laika, games like this etc. just seem to be spilling over with character and weirdness in a unique way that was so specific to that time, both in terms of technology and art.
