So during the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt, they decided to stop minting coins in silver below the 4 drachma denomination, but at first, they still wanted the intrinsic value of coins to match their denomination, and it takes a lot of bronze to be worth a small amount of silver. For instance, a half drachma coin from the reign of Ptolemy II (284-246 BCE) like this needed to weigh over 45 grams1 in order to equal the value of about 1.775 grams of silver, and there were coins even bigger.
