I've never built a computer before, but I bought this barebones kit and finished making that into a complete computer earlier today. But it had one issue: this was an open box return, and it didn't end up coming with SATA power cables, which meant I couldn't power the fan hub. I know enough about modular power supplies to know that the cords aren't standardized and that I shouldn't just grab whatever cord I can find, so I opened a ticket with MSI to order a replacement. But in the meantime, I remembered that you can get USB adapters for SATA drives, and those provided power to those drives. So I picked up this thing, cut off a little plastic so it'd fit the connector for the fan hub, and gave it a shot.
Good news: the case fans now light up.
Bad news: the case fans don't spin.
I've tried all three sysfan connections on the motherboard, and it makes no difference. I tried plugging the CPU fan to one of the sysfan connectors, and that worked fine, so it's not the motherboard. My question is whether there's a chance the issue is with the hacked together way of getting this thing power through a USB device that wasn't designed to be used this way, or if it still should just function and that I need to get a replacement for the fan hub.
