Princess Wing is a Japanese TTRPG where you play as mecha inspired magical girls fighting against aliens, and I really like it. You may have seen my post about the game going around here before, and I've seen plenty of people since say they really want to try this. Lately, I've been thinking about running something in addition to my regular Sword World 2.5 campaign, and I've decided I might as well use that energy to share this game I enjoy and give people a chance to try it out. I'm not planning on doing a full campaign, but there's a few pre-written scenarios for the game, and I wouldn't mind just running through those once.

If you're interested in giving this game a shot, reply to this post. I plan on using voice chat in Discord and using playingcards.io for the map and handling the cards. And I'm in the EST time zone and have a full time job, so I'm thinking Tuesday or maybe Wednesday evenings starting between 6:00 and 8:00 PM EST and maybe an occasional Saturday afternoon. Since I'm probably only running a few sessions, there is some flexibility here. In my experience, an average session of this game lasts around 2 hours.

And if you're wondering how I am as a GM, I ran what's still the only actual play session this game in English that I'm aware of, and you can check that out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukTrR1604oc

Good news! Everyone's favorite mecha inspired, playing card based magical girl TTRPG now has a fan translation for its first expansion, and you can grab it right here. You get four new dress codes, and that mermaid one can technically be any sort of part animal form, so if you want to terrify everyone with a fucking drider magical girl (an option they suggest!), go nuts. There's also several new character building options, including the kinds of healing and support based abilities that were lacking in the base game, one of which is a "Prismatic Guitar." And rules wise, they added options for status conditions, battlefield objects and pets, alternative combat goals such as tower defense, and most importantly, how to run this for 4 players. I haven't had a chance to use any of this yet (the translator just released it today), but there's so many things here that I want to try out, and you'll want to read this if you like the base game.

Speaking of the base game, that translation has been updated a little since I first posted about it, and you can get version 2.7 here.

Princess Wing is a TTRPG where you play as heavily mecha inspired magical girls who attend a magical girl academy and fight alien robots, and it just got a complete fan translation that you can get here.

Does it really have pile bunkers? Yes. Do you get to customize your frilly magical girl outfit? There's a base and accessories you can pick, several of which are described as looking like skirts or tiaras, and while that's all you pick from mechanically, the book makes it clear that magical girls often heavily customize their outfits to their taste, to the point where they basically say you could go for a Super Sentai look instead of something frilly if you really want. Does the the magical girl school have regular fighting tournaments? Of course it does, it's anime. It also has an annual fashion show. And that fashion show is also partially a fighting tournament.

I've read through all the player stuff now, and it's a blast of over the top anime silliness. System wise, it's very rules light outside of combat, and combat is tactical, but looks to be on the lighter end of such systems. And it uses a playing card based resolution system for combat that I really want to try out. Basically, I thought this game looked ridiculous and interesting in all the right ways, and I feel like a lot of you would agree with me, so I wanted to share.

Edit: since this post is making the rounds again, I should note that you can get the most up to date version of the translation here.

So I just ran my first Princess Wing game, using the second pre-written scenario, "Yearning Wings ~Ignite Wing~," and this thing does indeed kind of rule. The card based combat makes an interesting mix of resource management and tactical combat, and I don't think I've played an RPG system that emphasized teamwork this much. Like a lot of the combat playtime was everyone being like "OK, we can trade one card between rounds, and this one will let you combo off that other one...oh, then I could discard this one on my next turn, and you could use that power that lets you pick something from the discard pile to get that and combine it with your other three for a massive combo!" And players can do a LOT with the right combination of cards and powers. The one issue we think might come up is that this system feels like it could be broken by the right builds once you know what you're doing, but at least in this early state, while I think I'll up combat difficulty next time I run this, playing it was a blast.
