You are a peasant living under a feudal lord. He has his own superior to answer to, and this chain leads all the way to an absolute monarch. The king is considered to be the greatest and most important person by any metric, and all swear fealty to him. But as centuries pass we less less effective kings, corrupt kings, kings who turn against their own population. Regardless of how little a king benefits the country, he is seen as sacred, and conspiracy against him is s sacrilege.

The truth is, the king is important solely due to his proximity to the crown. More than any leader, subjects of the crown worship the crown itself. Monarchs are tasked to embody the concept of royalty and it is this concept that even the conspirators are afraid of crossing. As long as a country gives somebody absolute power to rule over it, who the king is has little bearing. Two sons with equal claim to the crown who disagree on every other topic will share the exact same reverence towards kinghood. Similarly, they will put the same amount of effort and resources into upholding the crown.

So much of history is about people trying to replace bad kings with good kings; then making those kings wear the same crown. Movements against the crowns themselves have existed. Some have been successful. These movements are always demonized. A good king would let an evil king kill him if it meant protecting the crown.
