The problem with making everything a franchise is that it's financially very convenient. If the same 5 companies own every popular character and keep recycling them instead of creating new ones, it's a lot less work for the companies that make halloween costumes and school supplies. Capitalists working together to diminish their own workloads, and in turn attempting to limit the scope of consumers to what they already control.
