i played SRB2 for the first time the other day and was floored to learn that the special stages are just NiGHTS
they weren't always! the NiGHTS mode used to just be an unlockable easter egg, & the special stages were something more like sonic advance 2's where you just run around an abstract environment collecting enough rings on a timer. really happy that they decided to put it front and center like this, both to change up the gameplay and to throw NiGHTS fans a bone. the last couple emeralds do kinda grate against what makes NiGHTS enjoyable to play though
