I could swear I saw someone the other day say in the very same post that WebP is bad because it doesn't have software support and JPEG XL is what should be adopted instead, and that software is bad because it doesn't support JPEG XL.
which is funny because it's gonna happen. webp celebrated its thirteenth anniversary a few days ago. software lacking webp support just isn't gonna add anything new ever
Turns out all the image formats anyone actually needs were established in like 1993, everything else is fake
I saw people yelling about how webp is bad because of the libwebp bug. “Have you ever seen an image format that can run arbitrary code?” And then they started hyping JXL, which to my understanding the reference implementation is also a relatively poorly fuzzed library written in C.
Looks like it’s C++, and it does have a decent number of fuzz targets for oss-fuzz.
one of the things i also noticed is that both of the recent decoder library exploits were on codecs developed by and for google, that now everyone has to use and depend on
i'm not sure exactly to what extent that's worse than an alternative but it does make me narrow my eyes
also it's not like other image libraries haven't had similar issues, they're just older
please stop writing C though, please
Oh yeah I told them that. It was definitely someone who knows nothing about security they just hate webp.
Which is funny because my W10 machine does appear to show thumbnails for webp. I can't open them in anything but my browser, but they have thumbnails! :v
