@scatsmanul asked:

Have you watched The Secret Life of Machines by Tim Hunkin?

ABSOLUTELY

[edit] it's been brought to my attention by gravis hisself that the "remasters" I linked to have been "AI" upscaled, resulting in some painfully bad results in places, which I was unaware of. I'm going to instead recommend watching an un-upscaled version, like this set available on archive.org instead, since the only version Hunkin has on his youtube channel is the mucked-with version

original post follows for historical reasons:

for folks unaware, the original eighteen episodes of TSLoM have been "remastered" (upscaled from first-gen PAL tapes since the original films prints are lost) for less painful viewing than the nth-gen copies that were floating around online in various forms:

  • twelve of them are available on Archive.org now, without the intrusive YouTube ads that pay Universal instead of Hunkin because the videos contained copyrighted music
  • the ones that aren't on archive.org are still on YouTube but definitely download them with yt-dlp or something instead because Universal doesn't deserve any advertising money
  • the original home page is still up with the comics and the other extras, but none of the videos on the site work

all of these episodes are worth watching, even thirty years years later, because they're both a masterwork in educational video-making, and the technology covered is foundational to the modern world

tim is a wonderful man, im glad he's kept at the same sort of stuff post show.
he followed me on twitter a while back funny enough...

i would definitely recommend his new series, "secret life of components" available on his youtube channel.

the upscaled versions, which are also on his channel, are worth a watch despite the jank they sometimes have, if for nothing other than tim's added commentary at the end

in reply to @apocryphalmess's post:

I can't support these remasters; they're AI upscaled, they don't look the tiniest bit better than the SD versions, and in multiple places the AI decides that Tim's face should be covered in horrifying black veins and things of that nature.

I mean I guess I shouldn't say they don't look ANY better, but I didn't get anything more out of them than the crappy SD encodes, and I did have to brace every time someone looked at the camera in case it shoved gut wrenching horror imagery in front of me.

yw, sorry if that came off harsh, didn't mean it to be, I've just been mad ever since these remasters came out. PAL tape rips look fantastic. all they had to do was produce a ~18-25mbps h264 edition and it would have been perfect, but instead someone swindled poor tim hunkin into letting them butcher his work, and the chances that we'll ever see a raw rip of the PAL copies is now zero, because "well it's already been done better, why would you want that"

nah it's okay, I went back and looked at them further and jesus fucking christ I see what you meant about the faces going all japanese body horror sometimes

and yeah I get why you'd be angry, everything about "AI" is fucking snakeoil and seeing something important get mangled by it is heart-wrenching
