“She slept surprisingly well, and for longer than I expected. I watch as she wakes up, and the first thing she notices is the fur. Short, silky grey fur covering her body from head to toe. she brings a hand—no, a paw up from under the bedsheets, studying it. Her fingers are roughly the same size, but now covered in fur, with leathery pawpads on the undersides and hard claws instead of nails. She touches her face ever so slowly. It too is covered in fur, and had elongated to form a short snout. She carefully runs her tongue over the small, sharp teeth. I watch as her wet, leathery nose wrinkles beneath her exploratory touches, whiskers twitching curiously.
Overwhelmed with curiosity, she climbs out of bed and walks over to the mirror on unsteady paws. A creature both familiar and unfamiliar gazes back at her, its bushy tail swaying unconsciously behind its back. She had shed her humanity and transformed into something else, and perhaps something she was happier as.”
