uhh I'm finding out running older minecraft versions is a pain in the ass

I don't know what magic version of java it wants of me all I know is that it gets stuck in the splash screen and won't run. I removed java to reinstall it and see if that worked and it tried booting up after java was removed so I really don't know what's happening with all that

Most commonly used older versions of Minecraft support Java 8 <3
Support for java 8 was dropped around 1.16 iirc?
You can use prism launcher (a fork of multimc) if you want to switch between different Java installations

see that's the weird thing I tried installing both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of java 8 and it didn't want to run. I'm not sure what I did wrong there but none of the beta installations in the launcher worked and I tried one alpha one and that one didn't work either

Pls don't install the 32 bit version of java if you're using a 64 bit machine T.=.T
Okay- if you're trying to run different Minecraft instances, I really don't recommend using the stock launcher, it'll only cause you pain.
This is the launcher I generally recommended for everything you might want to do with multiple instances https://prismlauncher.org/

Appreciate the help, I'm trying to use Prism and it's also not working out for me just like the official launcher. Still unsure about what's going on.
