I don't know what magic version of java it wants of me all I know is that it gets stuck in the splash screen and won't run. I removed java to reinstall it and see if that worked and it tried booting up after java was removed so I really don't know what's happening with all that
okay I appreciate everyone who offered help but I give up. a different launcher didn't help, reinstalling java didn't help, deleting the whole .minecraft folder didn't help, old versions are just borked and aren't worth the headache of trying to troubleshoot it. It used to work in the past but I have no idea why it isn't working now. Gonna just stick to remembering how old minecraft was instead of playing it
