games discourse was having a moment due to a polygon article with a dubiously worded headline again. nobody fucking read the article and just got mad at the headline which was "How The Last of Us became ‘the greatest story that has ever been told in video games’"
the whole point of the article is that it got that status because it's manufactured to be prestige media, it had cash, marketing, they kept the IP relevant since 2013, it's not affirming that it's the greatest story ever told in games, it's critical of that thought. It's just saying "this thing didn't pop out of the blue, it was inspired by a lot of previous work and took advantage of that". Cameron Kunzelman is a good writer, it's a good article.
