I don't think I posted about it here before but I'm actually looking forward to Starfield, Bethesda's next big title. At first I was thoroughly uninpressed. Looks boring and generic as shit, but then the thought hit me, they fucked up Fallout so hard by injecting mediocre sci-fi into that setting, can you imagine how hard they'll fuck up their own universe with mediocre sci-fi?? The story to that game has the potential to be a disaster. Awful. Total dogshit, and I'm only interested in that game to see how awful it is. After the genius writing of Fallout 4, with hits such as "are androids people" and "androids are just like the nuclear bomb", I have no faith they'll have anything clever to say in Starfield.
AAA games to me are more fascinating as a case study of "what went wrong", I feel like a lot of projects show the signs of the abusive working conditions the devs were in, you can get a feel for scope creep in the project, bloated design, etc. I have a feeling Starfield was way overscoped and there's not a lot they can do but ship the game they managed to make in the time and budget allowed.
