genuinely love the Hobbits, they're one of those one album bands (technically they released two but shh) that's a hidden gem with a cult following and very likely a shitty review on allmusic but those allmusic critics seem overly harsh to me, stuff like this is... so rare and so precious. I feel like bands in the late 60s were either too derivative of the Beatles or they were interesting and trying to do their own thing, the Hobbits strike me as interesting more than derivative. I'm going to hold my hand and not dump a list, the Hobbits are definitely into the very twee and whimsical side of the spectrum of psychedelic rock and sunshine pop, they're way more twee than the name would lead you to believe, this is not like Led Zeppelin referencing Tolkien at all, they went for something with more soft melodies, catchy vocals, and while they weren't a massive hit I'm glad their music's survived, mostly by being uploaded to youtube, like many psych rarities where original vinyl pressings are either
- rare
- expensive or
- both rare and expensive
some bands we're lucky to have had good re-releases for, see Sundazed for a good label who's reissued some gems on CD and in great quality, but some of them might be too obscure even for reissues on more modern music formats. I get the strong feeling that the Hobbits are one of those, hell I had to update Jimmy Curtiss's Discogs page to say he passed away in 2022, if you looked him up online the first thing you'd see is his obituary and yet nobody decided to update a massive database such as discogs? they don't have a wikipedia page either, but me and other psych fans across the globe will keep appreciating their music and short lived carreer for as long as possible, at least that's what I hope to do.
