(Gorbeljin of the Borlaaq, or "Gorbeljin Stoneface" [so named for her stoicism and reticence, such that some have been known to joke about her being a Qestir in a previous life], is known, despite her short stature, to be one of the fiercest warriors the Borlaaq have to hand, an expert in the use of the greatsword. If she were so inclined, she could likely take over as the Borlaaqi khatun, but her general attitude has made her few friends within the tribe, and was in part cause for her children facing some degree of bullying and exclusion as they grew up . Her children, all daughters, number four in total: Berude, the twins Orgelen and Orbei, and Khorijin. As is the tradition of the Borlaaq, their fathers are all from outside the tribe, as the Borlaaq only raise daughtersÂą, but Gorbeljin herself has only slept with two specific men; Berude and Khorijin have the same father, as do (naturally) Orgelen and Orbei.
Despite her reputation, Gorbeljin is actually fairly easy to read if you pay attention to her closely enough, and she does not withhold affection nor care from her daughters. Of said daughters, Khoriijin is surprisingly the most like her in attitude, and as such they get along perfectly. They can have an entire conversation with facial expressions, sounds, and the odd nod or two alone.)
Âą This is canon from Square Enix's own notes about the tribe--another tribe, the Iriq, follows closely behind the Borlaaq and raise the children that the Borlaaq do not raise. In this worldline, any members of the Iriq that are trans femme are given over to the care of the Borlaaq, and trans masc Borlaaqi are given over to the Iriq, but are not forbidden from seeing or interacting with their families in the other tribe; the canon does not make clear if this is the case, but I am choosing to believe that it is, given that the Dotharl are more than willing to accept that past lives and present lives don't even need to have the same gender continuity.
(Berude of the Borlaaq, or "Berude Flameheart", is Khorijin's oldest sister, and shares the same father. Berude was the target of much shame and bullying growing up because of Gorbeljin's distant relationship with most of her other tribeswomen--the other part of it was her slow physical growth, mostly because it resulted in her frame being much more similar to her mother's without the overbearing strength Gorbeljin is known for--at least until her last growth spurt kicked in and filled her out. As a result of all this, Berude is very aggressive, rude, and cocky, and is equally demanding of her younger siblings out of a sense of overcompensation.
Her unpleasant attitude belies her prodigious skill in the use of a lance, and she has made fine showings in Naadams past despite being unable to claim the title of khagan for the Borlaaq; she is respected amongst other Borlaaqi, but is not particularly well liked either.
Despite her prickly attitude, Berude is not nearly so defiant when it comes to her mother--much as she faults Gorbeljin's personality for a lot of their struggles, she loves her mother all the same, respects her strength, and will not tolerate insults or slights to Gorbeljin or her family members. All the same, her extreme sense of self-importance means that Orgelen and Orbei tend to play pranks on her when they feel she needs to be brought down a peg, and she gets along even worse with Khorijin than she does with the twins because of how similar to Gorbeljin Khorijin happens to be--in other words, all of the things she finds unacceptable about Gorbeljin but would never say to Gorbeljin's face wind up being reflected in Khorijin.
To some extent, this has been less of a problem between Berude and Khorijin as they've grown older, but it's still very easy, as seen here, for Berude to press Khorijin's buttons and get a fight started.)
