Hi! We're a fairly diverse plural system with various origins and interests! ADHD, autism, likely BPD. Uhm... Yeah, gonna work on this a bit more soon?

@LowBeyonder asked:

Favorite example of a brilliant mechanic in a game (video or not) otherwise unworthy of it?

This is interesting... I feel like more often I run into games that have a great premise with holistically poor execution, rather than a poor showing in general with one standout mechanic (or maybe those just don't stand out as much in retrospect). But there are two that I do recall:

  • I found Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons to be largely schmaltzy nothing with an overly cute control scheme but there's a moment at the very end where the controls pay off magnificently.

  • I think Cultist Simulator's core simulation of story through cards is excellent and gets completely squandered by the absolute nothingness of its progression (also iirc the creator is a shit).

I remember when I tried Cultist Simulator, it was like the most potent ADHD-bait timesink I'd ever encountered. It's one thing for me to lose a couple hours playing a game at home, but I think I sat in a Starbucks playing it on my laptop for 3 hours, a thing I definitely didn't intend to do, and then uninstalled it out of fear.

Then later when I thought about trying it again (sometimes you do want to turn your brain off for a few hours/I'm also medicated now lol), I remember, oh yeah, since then I learned that the creator is a shithead. Never mind.
