it's been 23 years but I still think video games have not taken to heart the lessons Majora's Mask has to teach (many of which to be fair came from Moon before it)

Skyward Sword isn't as bad as all that. yes the one boss fight you have to do a million size sucks tremendously, but it also broke out of what Zelda meant as a formula in ways that presage the most recent two offerings

the Oracle games are undersung achievements that marvelously capture and expand upon what's cool about Zelda despite being by a team with no prior work on the series

I think Zelda 1 is a fundamentally different kind of game than LttP and forward despite the constant references back to it, mostly because of its focus on secrets and discovering the terms of the game as you play. I'm glad to see this idea being expanded upon more with games like Tunic

as much as I am a lifelong Zelda enjoyer I think the series is really hampered by Nintendo's dogged insistence on being "family-friendly" in the most anodyne, sanitized way (as well as all the outright evil anti-preservationist anti-emulation shit they pull)
