"verify garfield path" is such a hilariously clinical way to put it that I'd forgive anybody for thinking the phrase on its own sounds like Star Trek technobabble.
Picard stared in quiet contemplation. The alien meteor was on a collision course with an M Class planet, where a burgeoning civilization was growing, completely unawares. Any direct intervention would be against the prime directive, so are they supposed to just watch as the alien asteroid destroyed millions, neither aware of their doom?
"Captain," Data said, turning in his chair, "I believe Wesley and I have an answer. We know the life form's physical path, but if we can verify its Garfield Path, we may be able to influence its trajectory with well placed Odie Waves."
"I was studying Garfield Theory for class, Captain," Wesley Crusher chipped in. "It should work!"
