The problem with that is, that a traumatic experience like that doesn't magically go away, I'm afraid that he'll have to live with this condition for the rest of his life, even if he learns that the creature that he's becoming has shaped shifting capabilities.
That doesn't mean you can't comfort him, I think he would greatly appreciate that.
