daily knowledge: Theodore Roosevelt is the man largely responsible for the fearsome reputation that is maintained by the piranha, or as he called them following a trip through Brazil's wilderness, "the fish that eats men when it can get the chance." however, his tour guide on the trip was feeding him exaggerated stories, as the piranha infested part of the river that was shown to Roosevelt had actually been netted off for weeks prior to the President's arrival. when the local people demonstrated the ferocity of the piranhas by leading a sick cow into the water, it was the fish's starvation that prompted the ensuing feeding frenzy, rather than the mere presence of a juicy target.
