Do you have advice for someone interested in making quick snappy roguelikes?

QUICK SNAPPY ROGUELIKE ADVICE

  • a good roguelike is compelling second-to-second, minute-to-minute, and hour-to-hour. loops within loops within loops
  • give players ample reason to try different things! this can be encouraged by techniques like curiosity, new goals, and achievements, or forced by techniques like random shops, unique obstacles, and resource scarcity. ideally you should try out both kinds!
  • there should never be just one best option. everything powerful needs to have a drawback; every drawback needs to have some way to survive it
  • every roguelike needs something that sounds great at first but if you actually try using it it'll be a gigantic pain in the ass/kill you instantly. a game is a series of pranks
  • but more specifically, a game is a series of moments you need to design around. you can design moments in more systemic games too! SNAKE FARM is built around a "fuck around/find out" cycle: see a snake, buy five of it, realize you shouldn't have bought that snake at all, die, laugh, repeat
  • email every single streamer who made a video about the most popular roguelike in your chosen subgenre and send them a key. trust me on this
