The combination of the wide spread of pellets and their relatively low speed, at least by the game's standards, makes the shotgun mostly useful at point-blank range (that is, unless you punch your own shot to make it explode). With the green variant, you can trade higher total damage for even less accuracy or straight-up turn in into a bomb.
