N64 de-compilation is old news. When are we getting saturn de-compilation and people sitting down and squeezing 60fps out of that?

Please

I would do nasty things for this

as cool as it would be i presume you'd need to sacrifice a goat or two to even do it given how the saturn's hardware is batshit insane

This IS true. The Saturn's hardware is absolutely stupid.

However, it's important to remember, so is the N64's. Both of these consoles are awkward as hell to deal with.

The problem with the SATURN, is that no one in the West gives a shit. The N64 decompilation project could TOTALLY be possible with the Saturn, it's just that it'd be difficult and require someone REALLY dedicated to the Saturn, and I dunno if that person exists.

I was looking at Retro Achievements' stats last night regarding the amount of players for the gen 5 consoles, and it was pretty telling about this topic. The PS1's top game had 28k players, and then they hovered in the high numbers for quite a while. The N64's top game had around 28k too, though that console fell off much harder. N64 fans are just rabid, even if the console itself actually lost that generational war compared to the PS1, on average.

And then there's the Saturn. Its top played game has 1.4k players. And it's just a port of a popular Playstation game. :/ (not even a good port, mind you) Hell, even its #3 and #4 games are ALSO ports of games you could easily play on the Genesis.

Panzer Dragoon Saga, one of the best games EVER made, only has 600 players. And a lot of that IS how bad the emulation tools are for it, mind you, the games are not nearly as accessible. But the emulation tools for the N64 are almost worse right now. People will put up with plugin-in based emulation that BARELY works to play N64 games. I had a LOT of trouble getting an emulator to play Pokemon Snap without errors. But people won't put in as much effort, or any really, to play Saturn games lol

Are you talking about Project 64? People moved on from that YEARS ago. The options people use today are Mupen64Plus (a fiddly mess with audio delay and rendering issues) and Simple64 (Mupen but good).

Saturn emulation has also come a long way since the days of SSF, but as far as I know your best option is still Mednafen.

In this case, I'm SPECIFICALLY talking about as it pertains to Retro Achievements, the data up there. Cause Retro Achievements requires specific emulators, and those emulators still use plugin based software.

The pages for these games are filled with people going "how the hell do I get Pokemon Snap to run properly?? There's a bug where the shutter on the camera doesn't glow red properly and it breaks the game" and other people going "use this plugin, it fixes the issue" then someone down the way going "Do NOT use that plugin, it changes the Prof Oak scoring system and makes some achievements impossible, use this one instead"

Nope, the best option on Retro Achievements is the Beetle Saturn core in Retroarch and its derivatives. It's not the best. Though it is noticeably better (and easier to set up) than the choices for N64 emulation on Retro Achievements, which helps prove my point.

Beetle is Mednafen, or forked from Mednafen. Is it just kinda old or not well maintained I wonder? I use Mednafen itself and it works really well, but I don't have much experience with the Retroarch version.

I think a lot of the Saturn community just doesn’t engage with Retro Achievements. I’m in the SegaXtreme and SHIRO! Discord servers and I read a lot of Saturn discussion on Twitter and Facebook but I very, very rarely see anyone mention Retro Achievements.

A lot of Saturn fans do play on original hardware, especially with the plethora of good ODE options that the console has. So that’s going to drastically reduce the numbers you’ll see on that site. Plus there are a ton of different Saturn emulators so if Retro Achievements works with just one of them in a single specific setup (through Retroarch) then that’s going to depress the numbers, too.
