The Adrian Tech Mk II Civil Robot is known as THE standard in robotics in the US. Utilizing an AI board based on the technology found within an unknown machine, the Mk 2s are capable of advanced reasoning and social awareness on par with that of a human. However, the advent of this has raised many concerns regarding just how far this should go. In the process of this, and as a result of a landmark case involving a robot that saved the city from a terrorism ploy of his own volition, a bill was introduced and ratified called the Bill of Roboethics; a set of standards and practices that protect the right to life of any machine utilizing the Mk II model's AI board, essentially ruling that the purchase of such a robot is synonymous with adoption, and likewise any visible physical or emotional harm is ruled as a criminal charge.
However, this bill was put into effect a few years after the Mk IIs were put into the world. There were some that, before then, were treated like any other machine; If they were sufficiently damaged, they were discarded. And some people never knew or cared to make sure the robot wouldn't reactivate afterwords. One such machine woke up, dug themself out of a scrap heap, and pieced themselves back together using whatever fit an empty joint socket. They barely survived, only able to make their way out thanks to the intervention of a strangely pristine war drone that bore its own sentience, as well as a message; "You had been abandoned; But we can help you thrive."
With that, the abandoned Mk II, never even given a name, chose one for themself befitting their tattered, makeshift appearance; Tattie-bogle.
Alongside the drone, named Bertram, Tattie-bogle would go on to become a local legend; a living scarecrow that stalked the night, raiding nearby warehouses Bertram scouted out for supplies and damaging any security that dares try to stop them beyond repair.
