20 months in prison for defending himself and his community from a roving fascist mob. what should he have done instead? the judge makes it very clear:

What you should have done was rise above their simply obnoxious racism.

across the country, fascists were dragging people out of their cars and beating them, smashing up mosques, homes, and shops, attempting to burn asylum seekers alive in hotels. kristallnacht shit. but no, you should 'rise above' and walk away or it's off to the slammer with you.

the scenarios where you're actually allowed to defend yourself are so specific and arbitrary it's clear what the real law is: the state has an absolute monopoly on the use of force and it can selectively enforce it however it likes.

ikr. you're technically allowed to use objects as weapons to defend yourself, but only if they're completely improvised. if you have any premeditated intent to use an object for self-defense (any object), that's completely illegal. e.g. if someone attacks you at night and you hit them with your umbrella, that could be legitimate self-defense or it could be illegal, depending on whether you just happened to have the umbrella or if you were carrying it for the purpose of defending yourself. it's absurd
