I went and put myself in crunch mode to get a bunch of stuff printed and finished before Christmas and I got struck with inspiration for a great gift for my parents, who are both big trekkies. Fortunately, some really great people have already modeled some great Starfleet Combadges and put them up on thingiverse.
Thingiverse user THEREALTHING_1 had created this perfect, what he claims is screen accurate combadge, so I took that into blender, was thrilled to see it could be separated into two pieces, and modified it with a couple slots for some small magnets. Whole thing printed with minimal problems and slots together perfectly. I made a test piece that I colored with rub’n’buff, which looked great, but was still a little shy of what I wanted. Also, rub’n’buff tends to wear off with a lot of handling, which is going to happen with a prop like this. So I got my hands on some metallic chrome spray paint instead and the results were fucking perfect and because I made so many backups in case I fucked up the other ones, now I have extra badges to give as gifts!
Also, you can see a DS9 type badge in there, which I got from Punished Props who made a really great STL for free, and I printed that one for me lol
