An unfortunate side effect of reading books and keeping up with world events is that you realize that many of your friends who very loudly espouse the benefits of killing the cop inside their head will still gladly welcome the state department representative inside their head. One of my main motivators for becoming more learned is hopefully acquiring the tools necessary to provide them with another point of view, if nothing else.
