Coming out in a week on steam and consoles, Balatro bills itself as a "hypnotically satisfying" deckbuilder wherein you play illegal poker hands against a series of escalating odds. The reason I'm saying it's a tentative recommendation is because I feel like if your brain chemistry is similar to mine, this is a genuinely addictive game that you might catch yourself playing a bit too much. The demo has only a sliver of the full game's features and I still had to stop myself from playing it over and over by reasoning that a win with all three available decks was more than enough to tide me over. When it releases in less than a week from now, I fear that other, more demanding games are going to fall by the wayside for the immediate gratification of building up fat stacks of mult. The presentation is story-light and aesthetic-heavy, making it all the easier to lose oneself in the sea of swirls and not-quite-right cards.
