Thought about this for a bit and my hesitance to piggyback on someone else's post was eventually overcome by my own ego thinking I've got it all figured out so here goes: in my opinion the reason we see the dems latching onto the "weird" messaging is because it effectively others the opposition while not calling attention to the fact that they're not really much better, or even really less weird. "Weird" is more nebulous than "corrupt", or "greedy", or "rife with sex pests", because all of those specific angles also apply to the dems. The fact that a lot of the modern GOP is definitely pretty weird is just a coincidence. It also appeals to the base instinct of all Americans to have a pejorative term for their opposition, and they're just so darn happy to have finally figured out one they can use without any guilt! Sorry to all the folks who are weird in fun and cool ways, maybe we can go back to being freaks instead?
