I've never been big on using tags to categorize my own posts or to find posts by others, but here on Cohost tags are significantly more essential than previous sites I've used - If I want to see posts about a topic that the accounts I follow aren't already posting, or if I want to make a post that gets seen by folks who don't follow me, either way I'll need to get tags involved.
This is all well and good, but I get kind of hung up on how I should tag stuff! I like to play Dota2, and I really like to talk about Dota2, so if I wanted to do that here, should I tag it #dota2 or #dota? There's only like five posts in each, but already there's at least one post in each tag that isn't present in the other, and since this is a relatively niche topic on a relatively niche website, I can't just rely on the hivemind to make the decision for me in a timely fashion. Do I also tag it #videogames?
At the end of the day, none of this is vital because I'm not super concerned about my posts being discoverable by others, but part of me realizes that at least a few of my interests have little or no overlap with anyone I am likely to follow or be followed by here, so if I want anyone to see it who will actually be interested in the topic, I'll need to figure this stuff out.
