Nowadays it helps to understand browsers more as choosing a set of features rather than a security thing, because almost every remotely popular browser (including Opera) uses an engine called Chromium as its base; all of the security updates are part of the base Chromium engine, and the developers of those browsers are simply improving the features of their browser. That's a simplification obviously, but it's really the only thing you need to know to answer your question.

And if "Chromium" sounds real similar to "Chrome", you'd be correct, Chromium is maintained by Google, and while Chrome is their actual browser, they make Chromium available to developers as a base to make their own browsers from.

I said "almost every popular browser" earlier because there is one major exception to the dominance of Chromium; Firefox. It uses its own engine and is maintained as a completely separate project from Chromium.

Now, ultimately you're going to be safe on the web no matter what browser you use as long as you don't do something actively stupid like run linkinpark.mp3.exe. But I would only encourage switching browsers if the actual feature set of a different browser appeals to you significantly over what you're currently using, because the security is pretty much going to be the same. And Firefox is an open source, deliberate stake of independence from what is otherwise a Google market monopoly due to the prominence of Chromium. So... I might be leaving my bias on the table here, but I think you're doing pretty good with what you already have.

Thank you very much for your in-depth perspective on it. I get a bit hypervigilant when it comes to it because I assume with venture capital every browser is eventually going to compromise on their users safety... That being said I'm in love with firefox but the customisability of opera gx was the main thing that piqued my interest. fuckchromethoiteatssomuchRAM
