watching the concept of the general strike devolve from "organized labor action" to "prisoner's dilemma as praxis" has been really weird to watch i gotta say

#.jtxt #this website thankfully doesn't seem quite as trigger happy about declaring mass action on a whim which is nice #the appeal i think in very online vagely lefty american circles is that its seemingly a zero-effort action right #simply don't go into work this week! you already didn't want to anyway but now you have the perfect excuse. you're fighting the good fight.#confronting the reality that its a massive privilege to be able to do this on a whim is conveniently sidestepped by offering alternatives to the work stoppage #alternatives that ofc do not contribute meaningfully to the theoretical mass action #it all just sort of becomes a weird in-group reaffirmation of belief #a very literal shibboleth #like. it Would be awesome if everyone in the imperial core all simultaneously stopped working. that would do an unbelievable amount of damage to their economies.#but nobody is going to commit to that without guarantee that they'll be okay. you need millions of people who are willing to play the nonary games. and that's pretty tough to do without. say. support infrastructure. unionized labor networks. perhaps a vanguard party to organize these efforts #its all just a bit silly innit.

This was kinda how i was feeling about the posts i saw online recently saying not to support scabs during the Lyft/uber/etc strike. Like, what makes someone a scab? Most of the drivers don’t belong to a union, who is funding them not working? Is literally every driver around the world who didn’t get the memo a scab who shouldn’t be paid to work that day? Like there’s a reason organized labor is organized, right?
