e-4268 Petition to the House of Commons
Whereas:

  • The world is becoming increasingly hostile to transgender and nonbinary individuals;
  • Transgender and nonbinary people's rights to live as themselves are being restricted and removed in many places;
  • This includes the so-called "Western democracies" which have historically been presumed safe;
  • The United Kingdom is revising their Equality Act to exclude trans people from its protections;
  • More than a dozen American states have enacted or are considering legislation eliminating or criminalizing gender-affirming care; and
  • Canada has prided itself on being an inclusive, tolerant, and welcoming society for everyone regardless of gender identity or gender expression.

We, the undersigned, residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to extend to transgender and nonbinary people the right to claim asylum in Canada by reason of eliminationist laws in their home countries, whatever country that may be.

in reply to @FoxBall's post:

the current prime minister, rishi sunak, said that he wants to amend the 2010 equality act, which currently includes sex as well as "gender reassignment" as protected categories, to remove the "gender reassignment" category and specify sex as "biological sex."

i don't live in the uk, but that's how i understand it.

Europe is not a monolith FYI: I know Spain doesn't have any detentions or anything, you can enter (as a tourist or however) and within a month start the process and it's just like a regular bureaucracy interaction that doesn't take your freedom away. Apparently you would have to give up your passport though.

Here in Argentina it's better tho, you keep your passport and can arrange permits for international travel, also you get the right to work n shit directly with the asylum seeker status and not 6 months later :p

Spain doesn't have detention camps for asylum seekers because they are too busy locking up people for writing songs that criticize the francoist period. it doesn't answer the question of what Canada is like about this.
