Sansa clip plus is still really solid if you can tolerate the teeny tiny screen. Install rockbox immediately.

Old ipods are nice if you like itunes. And prepare for little annoyances like broken gapless support in most models and itunes converting things to alac/aac from whatever you have your music in, etc etc. They do not reliably run rockbox, despite the port saying they are stable.

Generally any device that runs rockbox will do most of what you want. It's an issue of what you can find for cheap that is still reliable. For a while sansa clip+s were 20-40 all day every day, you don't want to pay a lot more than that because they do tend to sometimes just, fail. But since they take a microSD you can just pop that into a new one.

Do not buy a sansa clip no surname (no microSD) or any other sansa clip models (sport, zip, etc) as they do not run rockbox. You want rockbox.

I would not pay $80 for one personally but I also have a small pile of half dead ones to be fixed at a later date

The rockbox list is huge though. I like old cowons because I had them growing up. Anything (cowon or otherwise) with removable storage should do the trick.
