i personally think that all unsolicited emails that are not strictly security related should be outlawed
like, i would never opt-in to 99% of the emails that i get (and then immediate hunt down and unsubscribe from, so that they dont disrupt me further). i do not want 'promotional material'. i do not want 'offers'. i do not want 'calls to actions'.
what i do want is 'your password was reset' or 'you just logged in on a new device'. i'll even take the occasional privacy policy/ToS update bc those are trivially filterable. i'll throw a bone to emails relating to account status (e.g. suspended, activated, website shutting down - not 'oooo you're a GOLD member now!!' type of shit, but actual functional stuff).
what sucks is that this like. could probably be legislated. we could restore some of the sanctity of emails. i'm sure that companies would try to find ways around it, but i want a GDPR 'categorization of emails into strictly necessary/performance/etc' type deal where everything is explicitly opt in
(tangential pet peeve here is sign-up flows that have 'i agree to the ToS and want to receive mail :)' as one tickbox. fuck off with that. ToS agreement should be an implicit fucking part of clicking a 'create account' button)
