it'd be twice as funny if something popped out of the ground in the part that looks like a face, and the cut-out circle part is just Like That.
Legitimately, catching a glimpse of the world map in the background of an early-ish Steven Universe episode and seeing a giant fucking hole in the middle of Russia was the first time I realized that that show was actually being very deliberate in its worldbuilding. It's such a cool thing to see.
