Hi-Fi Rush

(2023, Video Game)

Finished my first playthrough a while ago... First off.

Loads of good gameplay? Fun, goofy ass characters? This much polish... for $30?!

Just cop it. It's that good.

I really do enjoy how it seems like this game came into existence without too much hype building it up. I remember being enamored with this game when I saw it pop up on the Xbox Developer Direct I was watchin' with friends.

🐧 Further Thoughts (spoilers)

What I love about the mechanics is that playin' immediately feels good to control. So the focus becomes gettin' better with timin' your combos to the beat. Though, the lack of a hard lock-on system makes the camera a struggle at times. Track 8, Chorus 9 (both phases) is a good example of how a lack of a hard lock-on hurts enemy engagements.

I've timestamped the video above (a little past the 46 minute mark) to show what this Chorus throws at you. It's a lot.

First phase is 4 grunts and 1 super grunt while environmental obstacles will try to get in your way. The second phase is 1 flying super grunt—that can damage you for grappling 'em—with 3 grunts with long range weapons. All this can be hard to parry/dodge due to 1: Too much visual noise and 2: damagin' obstacles in your way. Now the issue isn't there's a lot to deal with, but look how often the player is havin' to fight with the camera to get a view of the enemies. It also hilariously ends with 'em lookin' around to find the final enemy.

Lookin' at my final score for Track 8 is funny to me. That C really stands out.

A result screen for 'Track 8: A History Lesson' with the following scores: Six As, two Bs, and one C. Zero Continues, Clear Time of 65 minutes and 47 seconds, Just Timing at 64%, and Damage Received at 807 points. The Final Result being an A rank.

I think Hi-Fi goes a little overboard with one super grunt interaction. Like, some have a segment that turn into Simon Says after they reach near defeat. These segments require you to hit most of those inputs to the beat. Simple, but then after the Simon Says I have to do ANOTHER timed button press to defeat 'em. I rather the reward after the Simon Says segment just be defeatin' 'em.

Ultimately, whatever shortcomings I have with Hi-Fi is minor. It's honestly a refreshingly fun game to play from start to finish.
