Being able to choose what music you want to listen to would make your music streaming service unsustainable? Not being able to do this somehow increases revenue for artists??

We should be thankful that it's not even more dogshit??? Holy fuck.

Oh wait, it is even more dogshit! Not only does Spotify decide what music you might want to listen to, but you also have to listen to constant ads for the "privilege".

And oh? What's this? The web app on desktop allows me to play any song I want at any time, and it's artificially restricted on mobile? What a fucking surprise.

There is one bit of truth here: if you’re able to pick exactly which songs you listen to, then it doesn’t count as an “internet radio” service, which pays wayyy less in fees, due to some laws or contracts or something. But uh, the artists (via the record labels of course) are the ones collecting those fees. So they’re definitely not getting paid better.

Dunno why they decided to suck it up on desktop. Maybe it’s because way less people use it on desktop? Maybe the ads are more valuable because they can be visual as well, or larger, or people are more engaged, covering the increase in fees? Who knows, but it’s definitely true that they’re paying more fees when you pick the songs.
