With the silliness of the Arkasodara tribal quests, and presumably some of the other side quests, I really am getting an impression of the WoL as someone who is involved in big, heavy, fate-of-the-world stuff, but will also go do ridiculous stuff with small-timers just on a lark

That, at least, is the characterization I’m going for with Grace: she left home looking for adventure and variety, got swept up into some very serious, high stakes, and sometimes traumatic stuff, but will go and do something unimportant and ridiculous if it seems like fun. Growing up in the backwoods with an eccentric foster dad contributes to that: she’s perpetually a social outsider, but the flipside of this is that she fits about equally well (or poorly) into most groups, so with her considerable skills and reputation she can get involved in just about anything she wants.

This, tbh. The WoL strikes me as the sort of person who unapologetically loves adventure and trying new things, no matter how wacky. I also think part of why they help out the smallfolk with whatever they need is because they never forget their roots. They, too, were a small-timer once. Some nobody fresh off the cart to Ul'dah/Gridania/Limsa Lominsa with a thirst for adventure and a heart of gold, and I think they cherish those memories a lot more than they might let on, and it keeps them grounded, allowing them to forget their ego and be a bit goofy every now and again.
