This meme I saw months ago pretty well summarizes the attitude I see from a notable minority of healers in FFXIV. The thing that has this particularly on my mind was a run of Praetorium I tanked just now where the White Mage cast no almost no healing spells. After using my invuln on Nero’s tankbuster because I wasn’t confident I would survive it, I asked them pointedly if they had healing spells on their hotbar. They replied that healing wasn’t necessary on Prae except for the Gaius fight. I shot back that if someone flubbed a mechanic and died because they were at low health, that would wipe out their gain in DPS. I blacklisted them after the dungeon because I have no desire to ever play with someone who has that attitude. I hear that kind of heal-only-if-necessary approach is necessary for Savage content, but it strikes me as both callous towards the party and boring for the healer if you’re not actually healing.

This ticked me off enough that I went and healed a dungeon myself afterward. I was attentive to the party, prompt about topping people off as soon as they took damage, and got three commendations. So let that be the lesson: be kind and attentive, get praise; be callous, get blacklisted.

it's funny, i actually get yelled at if i focus on keeping people topped up. some tanks get really weird about their pride, like you're insulting them and saying that they're not doing good enough for keeping everyone alive.

the balance i've struck is trying to keep everyone above 2/3rds health at a minimum, and otherwise layer everyone with shields and Whispering Dawn then let Carbuncle deal with the rest. people rarely die unless they really beef consecutive mechanics and i generally have enough overhead to focus on damage output.

"healing isn't necessary" though? the hell? that's literally ONLY true if you're a SCH and in the three tutorial dungeons. beyond those, if your tank does a moderate-to-big pull the trash packs WILL shred you if you're not healing!

I have never encountered that attitude when I heal, and as a tank main you are welcome to keep me and the party healthy any time you like. As for party protection, I think it’s pretty cool when a tank’s party mitigation and a healer’s barrier combine to let everyone ignore a partywide attack. But it’s impossible for the tank to always protect the party, let alone heal very much, so of course it’s the healer who’s the primary guardian of the party’s lives. The tank is the decoy, present to take hits on behalf of those who can’t.

There's alll kinds of players in this game, for better or for worse. I think part of it is from what you mentioned in OP about high end raids, that attitude of "they should be able to handle it! they need to be playing optimally! stop wasting time on them!"

Thankfully my shields are always up and there's nothing arrogant tanks can do about it >:3c If they really want me to focus on damage, fine, I'll strike a compromise, but no one is going below that 2/3rds mark for long on my watch! And Carby heals enough to get them topped up pretty fast if the shields are up.

The kind of people that play this game just baffle me, like if you're just gonna be a piece of shit why are you playing a game with other people?
If you're so concerned about "muh optimal gameplay" then fuck off to Aether 😒

Luckily I haven't run into very much asshole behavior myself but I've definitely seen the war stories

This meme amuses me because if anything, I'm the opposite. Like if I'm tanking obviously I'm gonna make sure I got aggro on everything unless it's boss adds I know are supposed to be the DPS' job.

If I'm healing tho, hell yeah I'm all about keeping people topped up because holy shit why else am I there? Especially in a game where the big boss mechanics tend to be designed so a player can take two, maaaaybe three big hits before they're floor paste. Yeah DPS matters a little but not more than "the real DPS not being dead."

Haha, yeah, definitely with you on the healing! When I was leveling up Warrior, at first I wasn’t sure I wanted to deal with my party support abilities, but these days I’m kinda protective; I use my party mitigations liberally, and bust out Nascent Flash if it looks like the healer(s) could use a hand. But of course maintaining aggro and positioning enemies appropriately are the most important things.
