Just watched the new Dawntrail launch trailer, and it looks fine, but mostly leaves me flat. Yes it’s pretty, but it also reminds me of how tired I am of the overwrought emotional tone of Final Fantasy writing. I will certainly play it, but it will succeed or fail for me on its gameplay; after playing through all the previous expansions I am growing increasingly numb to FFXIV writing. It might just be healthier for me to keep working through the Yakuza games instead.

I'm kind of with you on this one, but I hit that wall for the first time in Stormblood. By that point I was very tired of war, and the swings at "this high ranking Garlean officer has such a sad story" went completely flat. It was so much that I abandoned the character and rolled another to play through ARR and HW again, got through the Steppe, got tired, and skipped to Shadowbringers.
Shadowbringers felt great and I generally enjoyed it (even if we could have skipped the fish people completely and gone straight to Amaurot without missing anything).
Endwalker... Was kind of hit and miss. I'd have been content to leave Garlemald to its fate, siege the tower, and go on.
I'm looking forward to some lighter tone and wacky adventure in Dawntrail, and a bit less save civilization while my friends get killed again. I hope we get that.

Oof very much. I loved Shadowbringers, and I also felt like there were a couple things that wasted my time there: building the elevator to go after Vauthry, and yeah everything between Vauthry and Amaurot. I don’t expect the stakes to be as high as in Endwalker — after all, Squeenix needs to build up gradually to their next big decadal story climax — but I would like just a plain adventure without tragedy or drama.

Yeah, the elevator was also a bit of a stall but I had fun in the goofy side quests at Tomra. So that made it a bit more amusing.

Agreed though. I wasn't expecting it to be so heavy in Endwalker but I can appreciate why. Despite how it ended, Elpis was still bright and beautiful and full of hope.

So yeah. I wish all FFXIV storytellers a very strong don't kill my friends again.
Let's go explore the world, and maybe fight in a tournament while everyone else squabbles and politicks for a while.
